This page lists every category you can map in Accounting > Settings > Mappings, grouped the way the settings screen groups them. For how mappings are chosen and applied, see Account mappings.
Mappings aren’t available until you connect your accounting system. Plane pulls your chart of accounts from that connection, so there are no accounts to map to before it exists.
A few things to know when reading the lists:
  • Your settings screen only lists categories for the worker types you have paid through Plane, so you may see fewer than this page lists.
  • Every category can have a default account and department rules.
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit card, and fixed asset accounts are never offered, whatever the category.
  • The named benefit types are US benefits. Benefit types not listed here use General benefit expense and General benefit payable.

Employees outside the US

Employees hired through Plane’s employer of record use the same Employees tab. The Employees list is a superset: it includes categories that only apply in some countries, such as DSR for Brazil and 13th/14th salary, and each country’s payroll uses the subset that applies to it. In practice, international payroll uses a small set of categories:
  • Earnings: mostly regular earnings and allowances, plus bonus, vacation pay, severance, and commission where they apply. Countries with statutory extra months of pay, such as Brazil, France, Indonesia, Italy, the Philippines, and Portugal, also use 13th/14th salary.
  • Employer taxes: every employer-side tax and social contribution posts to Employer tax.
  • Benefits: benefits post to General benefit expense. The named benefit types apply to US payroll only.
  • Reimbursements: the same reimbursement categories as US employees.

What you can’t map today

  • Individual taxes. Employer taxes map to one account and payroll tax liabilities to another. The individual tax names appear in each journal entry line’s description.
  • Dimensions other than department. Plane tags lines with a QuickBooks class or department through reporting categories. Locations, entities, projects, and custom dimensions are not supported.
  • Currencies other than USD. Journal entries are recorded in US dollars.
