Plane maintains holiday calendars so that public holidays are automatically recognized across your team. This matters for payroll calculations, leave management, and making sure your workers know when company-observed holidays are coming up.

How holidays work

Plane sources national holiday data by country and year, so you always have an up-to-date calendar for each country where you have workers. Holidays are tied to a specific date and country, and they appear on your team’s shared calendar. When Plane calculates working days—for leave requests, payroll, or scheduling—public holidays are factored in automatically. A worker requesting a week off will not have a holiday counted against their leave balance if it falls on a recognized public holiday.

Holiday calendars

Each country has its own holiday calendar, populated with nationally observed holidays. Plane fetches and maintains these calendars automatically, so you do not need to manually enter public holidays for each country where you operate. Holiday calendars are organized by country and year. When a new year approaches, Plane populates the upcoming year’s holidays so your team can plan ahead.
Holiday calendars cover national public holidays. If your company observes additional holidays beyond the national calendar (like a company anniversary or an extended winter break), you can work with Plane support to customize your holiday schedule.

How holidays interact with time off

Holidays and leave policies work together in several ways:
  • Leave calculations—When a worker requests time off that spans a public holiday, the holiday is not deducted from their leave balance. For example, if a US worker requests Monday through Friday off and Wednesday is a national holiday, only four days of leave are used.
  • Payroll—Holiday pay is handled based on the worker’s country and employment terms. Salaried employees continue to receive their regular pay on holidays. Hourly workers may receive holiday pay depending on their arrangement.
  • Calendar visibility—Holidays appear on the shared team calendar, so everyone can see upcoming days off when planning work and scheduling time off.

Holidays by country

Because Plane supports teams across many countries, holiday calendars vary based on where your workers are located. A worker in France sees French national holidays, while a worker in the United States sees US federal holidays. This per-country approach means:
  • Leave balance calculations respect the correct holidays for each worker’s location
  • Payroll calculations account for the right set of holidays per country
  • Workers see the holidays that are relevant to them
If you are expanding into a new country and want to understand what holidays are observed, the holiday calendar for that country is available in Plane as soon as you have workers there. Contact support@plane.com if you have questions about holiday handling in a specific country.

Holiday visibility for workers

Workers see upcoming holidays on their calendar in Plane. This helps with planning time off—they can see which days are already holidays before submitting a leave request, avoiding unnecessary use of their leave balance. Holidays are displayed alongside approved time off and other calendar events, giving workers a clear picture of their schedule.
Plane’s holiday calendars cover national public holidays by default. If your company observes additional holidays, contact support to discuss adding them to your workspace’s calendar.
Yes. Plane accounts for holidays when calculating payroll schedules. If a scheduled payroll processing date falls on a holiday, the system adjusts accordingly to ensure workers are paid on time.
Plane supports holiday calendars for a wide range of countries. If you are hiring in a country where holiday data is not yet available, reach out to support@plane.com and the team will help get it set up.
