For money to move in Plane, both sides need a connected account: workers need a bank account to receive funds, and your company needs a funding source to send them. This page covers how accounts work on both sides.

Worker bank accounts

Every worker who receives payments through Plane needs at least one bank account on file. Bank accounts are added during onboarding or at any time from the worker’s profile.

Adding a bank account

Workers can add their own bank account from their Plane portal. They provide:
  • Country—where the bank account is located.
  • Currency—the currency of the account.
  • Account details—account number, routing number (or equivalent), and bank name. The specific fields vary by country and currency.
  • Account holder information—the name and type (individual or business) of the account holder.
Admins can also add bank accounts on behalf of workers from the dashboard. This is useful when setting up a worker who is not yet active in the system.
The required account fields depend on the country and currency. Plane dynamically adjusts the form to show only the fields needed for each combination—you do not need to look up what is required.

Account verification

New bank accounts go through a verification process before they can receive payments. The verification flow depends on how the account was added:
  • Instant verification—when a worker connects their account through a supported banking integration, verification happens immediately. The account is ready to receive payments right away.
  • Micro-deposit verification—for manually entered accounts, Plane sends two small deposits to the bank account. The worker confirms the deposit amounts in Plane to verify ownership. This typically takes 2-3 business days.

Verification states

Bank accounts move through the following states:
StateMeaning
PendingThe account has been added but is not yet verified. Micro-deposits may be in transit.
VerifiedThe account is confirmed and can receive payments.
DisabledThe account has been disabled (for example, after a failed payment or at the admin’s request). It cannot receive payments until re-enabled.
RemovedThe account has been deleted. It is no longer visible or usable.
Only verified accounts can be used for payments. If a worker’s only account is unverified, payroll items for that worker will show a blocker until verification is complete.

Multiple accounts per worker

Workers can have more than one bank account on file. This is common for workers who:
  • Receive payments in different currencies (for example, a USD account and a EUR account)
  • Have both a personal and a business account
  • Are transitioning from one bank to another
One account is always marked as the default. Plane uses the default account for payments unless a specific account is selected. When a new account is verified and no other current accounts exist, it automatically becomes the default.

Preferred account by currency

When a worker has multiple accounts in different currencies, Plane automatically selects the account that matches the payment currency. If no exact match is found, Plane falls back to the default account and handles currency conversion. This means you do not need to manually select an account for each payment—Plane picks the best available option based on the currency.
Encourage workers to add an account in the currency they are paid in. Direct-currency payments avoid conversion fees and arrive faster.

Company funding sources

Your company’s funding sources are the accounts Plane charges to cover payments and payroll. You manage funding sources in your organization settings.

Bank accounts

You can link a US bank account as a funding source. Plane uses ACH to debit the account when payments or payroll runs are approved. Bank charges typically take 2 business days to settle. To add a bank account:
1

Connect your bank

Link your bank account through a supported integration or enter your account and routing numbers manually.
2

Verify the account

For manually entered accounts, Plane sends micro-deposits that you confirm to verify ownership. Integrated connections are verified instantly.
3

Set as default

If you have multiple funding sources, choose which one is the default. Plane charges the default source unless you specify otherwise.

Plane balance

You can also fund payments from a Plane balance. Balance-funded charges settle immediately, which means payments can be delivered faster. This is particularly useful for time-sensitive payments or when you want to avoid ACH settlement delays.
Your funding source must have sufficient funds to cover charges. If a charge fails due to insufficient funds, the associated payments will be delayed until the charge is retried and succeeds.

Managing accounts

From the dashboard, you can:
  • View all accounts—see every bank account for a worker, including their status and currency.
  • Set a default—change which account is used by default for a worker or your company.
  • Disable an account—temporarily prevent an account from receiving payments without deleting it.
  • Remove an account—permanently delete an account. The default account cannot be removed until another account is set as default.
Account changes take effect immediately. If you change a worker’s default account, future payments will use the new account. In-progress payments continue to the originally selected account.
Micro-deposits typically arrive within 2-3 business days. Once the deposits appear, the worker (or admin) confirms the amounts in Plane to complete verification. If the deposits do not arrive within 5 business days, contact support.
Yes. Workers can add bank accounts in any supported country and currency. Plane selects the best account for each payment based on the currency match.
In-progress payments continue to the account that was selected when the payment was created. Removing an account does not cancel payments already in flight. Future payroll runs will flag a blocker if the worker has no active account.
